If you have ever had a feeling that you needed clarification on how you could improve your life, then Seth Godin’s altMBA workshop is for you!
Are you currently working hard on your business and family while not quite reaching your full potential? Well, that was me. My business was growing, I had established a name for myself, and I appeared to be doing things right. I belonged to the right groups, was following the right people, sharing information, attracting an audience, taken the necessary courses, received certifications and credentials, hired a bookkeeper and an assistant. For an entrepreneur, I was doing pretty good. Money could be better, but hey, at least I was not losing money.
Letting go of self-doubt
For all I was doing right, something was wrong. It was difficult for me to put into words but I experienced an uneasiness that was unshakeable. I even wondered if maybe it was a mid-life crisis.
Well, being a take charge person, I started to poke around for answers to the daunting questions I had. One day I received an invite from Seth Godin to participate in a program called the AltMBA program and I had no idea what to expect. Through the years, I learned about his philosophy via his emails and videos; some things made sense to me and some I did not. But, for the most part, I revered his wisdom in business and trusted him.
It sounded intriguing, an MBA and a quicky, I am into that! Seth Godin offered insight into discovering my hidden potential. The thought of an AltMBA experience caused me to dig deeper. I clicked the link and found tons of information that began to pop up. Link after link, each one brought me deeper into the abyss. As I was falling deeper into a land of exploration, I finally reached the last link… will I leap or will I back away? I did back away at first. I was scared and a bit ill-prepared for the questions asked of me.
Diving In
It took me a full Sunday morning to fill out Seth Godin’s intricate AltMBA questionnaire. Moreover, I’d still need to be considered, as only 100 people are. How would I measure up? In the end, after a month of waiting to see if I would be picked (hah) the email arrived along with a list of reading material. Along with all the books a medal with the words “Do the hard part first,” arrived. Also, some encouraging postcards with affirmations on each one, and a to-do list that would send anyone under the covers to hide from it all. I knew then that I was in for a ride of a lifetime.
Learning to embrace the tension
As you can imagine, the experience of participating in Seth Godin’s altMBA program was life-changing. Never before have I taken such a chance to be vulnerable in front of 100 business cohorts, all the while discovering vital parts of who I am and how I can make a difference in the world.
I will continue to write about all my experiences with Seth Godin’s AltMBA program and my colleagues but for now, let me leave you with a thought.
Embrace tension in your life, “it” is what allows you to soar.

Danielle, if ever you have the time, this program is something beneficial to enhance any writers skills. Getting through the discomfort of having to put oneself for all to comment on was tough. But I learned from it more than if I hadn’t.
